Background
I found my early academic footing at the intersection of art history and social justice. My undergraduate thesis tracked the evolution of the artistic medium known as social practice, applying it to the issue of sexual violence on American college campuses. In tandem with my written work, I designed an original performance art piece to empower female students with creative agency and challenge narratives of disempowerment in culturally-fraught spaces.

After nearly a decade in the humanitarian sector, my passion for the arts still informs my understanding of social and environmental justice. I have worked with a host of nonprofits and development projects, from Nicaragua to Uganda, primarily on issues related to gender-based violence, children’s education, and food security. I served as a domestic violence counsellor in Southern California before moving to Edinburgh, Scotland to complete a postgraduate degree in International Development. My Master’s research explored the philosophical underpinnings of domestic agriculture as an ‘integrated’ approach to chronic malnutrition in rural Guatemala.
In 2021, I co-founded BeDo—an education initiative dedicated to the wellbeing of impact-driven professionals. We aim to provide fellow researchers, activists, and humanitarians with tools and training to mitigate the negative mental health outcomes associated with field-based, impact-driven work. I serve as BeDo’s Chief Executive Officer, developing and delivering original programming on topics like trauma sensitivity and compassion-based research methods. My work with BeDo has guided my research into exciting and previously unfamiliar realms of neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral science, and I now hold certifications in Applied Compassion from Stanford University’s Center for Compassion & Altruism Research & Education (CCARE) and Traumatic Stress Studies from the Trauma Research Foundation (TRF).

Current Projects
An interdisciplinary scholar at heart, my current research interests range from alternative food systems and regenerative agriculture, to contemporary yoga studies and new age spirituality. Geographically, I specialize in the United States and Latin America, with a particular interest in Guatemala where I have lived and worked, off and on, since 2015. I am currently working on independent research projects, including a forthcoming cookbook of traditional Guatemalan recipes with my long-time collaborators at Seeds for a Future, and applying for PhD programs.
